Microsoft Teams is the hub for teamwork in Office 365. Teams is the communications client for Office 365 that will replace Skype for Business over time. You will use Teams for your call, chat, video, file sharing and meeting needs..
You may have started receiving updates for this automatic upgrade that is coming to your office 365 environment, and it’s not really something you can delay.
Check out the Features and Functions of Microsoft Teams here. We also have training available as part of the Sharify packages that will help you make the most of SharePoint and Teams and understand how they work together.
What do i need to do?
If you are not using Skype for Business then don’t worry too much, you wont see anything different. If you are already using Teams then again, don’t worry nothing will break but you will start to see some new features and functions appear as the upgrades happen.
If you are using Skype for Business then you need to prepare. Skype for Business will stop working once the upgrade occurs and users will not be able to login. Most people on the Business Essentials and E3 licensing plans who are using Skype for Business use it for internal communications and whilst the transition to teams will mean change, you will still be able to use the chat, call and meeting functions within Teams – along with heap more features!
To take advantage of teams you will need to deploy the Microsoft Teams Client application to your computers and have people login. It will be a little bare but you will have the basic functions available and ready to go.
If you are using an E5 License with Voice or are using Skype for Business as your phone system then a few more changes and planning will be needed. Most of these tenants will not be upgraded in the Short Term but this is where the biggest impact is going to be.
